Chiang Mai is ready to spice up its reputation, with the second annual Chiang Mai Food Festival preparing to take center stage as part of the city’s ambitious transformation into a year-round ‘Festival City’.
Following a meeting held on Sept. 12, 2024 at Uang Kham Sai restaurant, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) laid out plans for an exciting 2025 calendar, where each month will celebrate a distinct festival theme.
The Chiang Mai Food Festival, scheduled from January 24-26, 2025, will be the highlight of the city’s ‘Festive Happiness’ theme, kicking off the twelve-month festival initiative. Led by TCEB Chiang Mai and in collaboration with local food bloggers, restaurateurs, and the Chiang Mai Restaurant Association, this initiative is designed to boost tourism and create a vibrant, sustainable cultural environment in the city.
The overarching goal? To position Chiang Mai as an international festival destination, with events that attract both locals and tourists year-round.
A Festival for Food Lovers and Beyond
Under the theme “Mood Food,” this year’s Chiang Mai Food Festival aims to explore the connection between food and mental well-being. With a focus on nostalgic cuisine, health-conscious dishes, and eco-friendly practices, the event promises to be bigger and better than ever. Featuring an artisanal market, local ethnic foods, and international delights, the festival will offer attendees a flavorful journey through Chiang Mai’s rich culinary heritage.
A key element of the festival will be its environmental initiatives, with efforts to make the event zero waste. Various environmental groups are stepping in to ensure that sustainability remains a core focus, with local farmers and producers showcasing their eco-conscious products. Additionally, the festival will include workshops, cooking classes, food photography tutorials, live music, creative chef tables, and plenty of interactive experiences to immerse visitors in Chiang Mai’s food culture.
Turning a Dream into Reality
Chiang Mai’s journey to becoming a ‘Festival City’ has been in the works for decades. Honorary British Consul Ben Svasti Thomson, a key figure behind the vision, shared insights from his recent trips to the renowned Edinburgh Festivals. He highlighted how Chiang Mai’s Festival City strategy has its roots in discussions that started over 30 years ago. What was once a distant vision is now moving forward, as Chiang Mai gears up to emulate the success of major global festival cities.
With the Chiang Mai Food Festival leading the charge, the city is poised to establish itself as a culinary and cultural destination. From street food to high-end dining experiences, and from workshops to live entertainment, the festival promises to engage all five senses, showcasing the best of what Chiang Mai has to offer.
A Festival for the Whole City
Plans to expand the food festival across Chiang Mai are already in the works, with discussions to extend the event to different neighborhoods in future editions. TCEB’s goal is to collaborate with local businesses, organizations, and citizens to ensure that each month’s themed festival reflects the diversity and richness of Chiang Mai’s cultural scene. As the festival grows, it’s expected to drive tourism and local business while fostering a deeper connection between Chiang Mai’s residents and its vibrant culture.
